South Africa is a young and developing country. The powers that be are doing their best to instil an awareness in our people about how beneficial tourism is, and how to treat travellers as welcome 'guests' to our beautiful country.
But there is a lot YOU as a traveller can do to ensure that tourism remains a positive experience for all.
Here are some tips that will help you enjoy your travels, while reducing your carbon footprint and being culturally aware:
Stay on the path:
Wandering (or driving) off the path or road can often cause erosion and trampling ecologically sensitive plants - which can take lifetimes to recover, if ever.
Respect our wildlife:
Enjoy watching animals from a safe distance - do not try to touch, feed or corner them.
Protect endangered species:
Please do NOT buy anything that exploits wildlife in any way, threatens the natural environment or comes from a threatened source eg ivory.
Do not litter:
Please take care of your own garbage - regardless of whether the locals don't seem to. Re the solution, not the cause! If you smoke, please take your butts with you - the cellophane wrappers on most cigarette packs work perfectly well for this!
Reduce waste:
Recycling is still pretty limited in most areas. Opt for less packaging wherever possible. Reduce, re-use, recycle.
Don't contaminate water:
Use only biodegradable soaps and shampoos while camping. Avoid sunblock while snorkelling as the chemicals are harmful to the coral reef - wear a rash-vest/shirt instead.
Respect differences in cultures:
Local customs and traditions are often way different to eg European. Take time out to learn some customs & cultures - what appeals ... and what may offend. You'll be richly rewarded with friendliness wherever you go!
Be considerate about taking photos:
Don't assume it's ok to take photos of people - always ask permission - and respect their wishes. Always ask permission to take photos of people and respect their wishes if they refuse.
Learn a few words
There are 11 official languages ... and lots of slang words. Learn a few common ones - even if it's just 'please' or 'thank you' in one of the local languages. You'll be amazed at how the people appreciate it and you'll enrich your experiences unbelievably!
Don't give cash to beggars
We honestly believe that this creates a culture of dependency rather than feeding anyone. Often older kids or parents send young kids out to beg as they're likely to earn more. Rather give some food, bread, fruit or perhaps clothes. If you're concerned about any children, give Childline a ring on 08000 55 555 or visit

Support Locals
You can help local artists and artisans by buying their crafts & wares. South Africa is dotted with plenty craft markets - from humble road side stalls to sophisticated & upmarket craft centres. Ask your tour guide or lodge staff where the best ones can be found.
Although a hectic cliche - it does say it best:
Take only memories, leave only footprints!
