Local Soccer Star is 2010 SA Ambassador |
Local South African soccer hero, Lucas Radebe, has been selected as the country's "2010 Ambassador to the World" in the run up to next year's 2010 FIFA (TM) World Cup. This appointment was announced by our Tourism Minister, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, at an event in Johannesburg last Thursday evening.
Minister Van Schalkwyk was quoted as saying how privileged South African tourism was to have someone of Radebe's stature and calibre to partner with them.
There is growing excitement in the country as the big event draws nearer, and Radebe is expected to become a big part of this hype and build-up.
Born in Soweto, Radebe is already a well-known and respected soccer figure. He made his international debut for the South African soccer team in 1992. He was capped 70 times.
He then went on to an
illustrious career with the renowned English club, Leeds United, which he captained
from 1998 to 2002.
Lucas Radebe retired from football in 2005.
