2010 Newtown Festival will showcase South Africa |
The Cultural Precinct of Newtown in downtown Johannesburg will be the place to be for the duration of the 2010 FIFA (TM) World Cup.
Because the Newtown's 2010 Festival is geared to show to the rest of the world, just what South Africa is all about.
For over a month, residents and visitors alike will be treated to a spectacle of music, dance, theatre, spoken word poetry, literature, craft, film, photography, science, outdoor performances and visual art held in a variety of indoor and outdoor venues with some free performances offered.
In an atmosphere that is fresh, energetic, creative and uniquely South African, the festival will take place in the heart of the city, with safe and easy access from Nelson Mandela Bridge and Carr Street interchange.
Newtown is a hub of theatres, art galleries, restaurants, museums, dance studios, craft markets, nightclubs and jazz spots - home to places like the Dance Factory, MuseumAfrika, the Market Theatre, Bassline and SAB World of Beer.
Some of the 2010 programme highlights traditional music and dance by local contemporary and traditional performers, busking, a public open stage, and various dance, music and theatre programmes in the various venues.
Little ones will be enterrtained at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre with a fun-filled programme of 'edu-tainment' and games, music, clowns, magicians, acrobats, jugglers, jumping castles, street theatre and dance performances.
All the galleries and museums in the area will also be hosting exhibitions and programmes focussed on the history of South Africa and African soccer as well as African arts and crafts from all over the continent.
Newtown is where it's at to experience the real feel, taste and flavour of the first World Cup to be held on the African continent.
