Beethoven Cello Sonatas - CD Launch:
Peter Martens and Luis Magalhães
The Franschhoek Classic Music Festival proudly presents
internationally acclaimed cello-piano duo Peter Martens and Luis
Magalhães in the launch of their recent CD: Ludwig van Beethoven -
Complete Sonatas for Cello and Piano. Recording this CD in the Endler
Hall in Stellenbosch for international release on the Two Pianists
label, the artists, who have individually performed extensively in South
Africa and in Europe, are resident in Stellenbosch. Their duo
performance for the Franschhoek Classic Music Festival opening concert
includes Beethoven Sonatas for Cello and Piano in A major op 69, in C
major op 102 no 1 and the rarely performed Sonata for Horn (or Cello)
op 17.

Morning Recital: Bryan Wallick – USA, piano
Pianist Bryan Wallick is featured in a special piano recital
playing the newly acquired grand piano in the NG Church - Franschhoek.
The piano has been the centre of a widely publicized community
fundraising drive over the last two years. Bryan Wallick, gold medalist
at the 1997 Vladimir Horowitz International Piano Competition in Kiev,
has performed throughout the United States and is concurrently
pursuing his career in Europe. He made his New York recital debut in
1998 at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall and his Wigmore Hall recital
debut in London in 2003. His programme includes music by Robert
Schumann - Symphonic Etudes, Claude Debussy - Estampes, Liszt/Schubert
Song transcriptions (Gretchen, Ave Maria, Erlkonig) and the bravura
Liszt/Horowitz - Rackozy March.

Global Guitar: Ulrich Busch – Germany, guitar
German guitar virtuoso Ulrich Busch gives an intimate recital in the
sublime luxury of the Screening Room at Le Quartier Français. Guests
will enjoy a glass of wine and snacks on arrival in this intimate
luxury venue seating 30 patrons. The two performances, at 1pm and 5 pm,
are combined with a special preview of the Franschhoek Artists
exhibition in the adjacent gallery, IS Art. Winner of the Radio
France Competition 1990 in Paris, Ulrich Busch plays an entertaining
selection of popular guitar music from around the world including folk
music from Ireland and Japan, and guitar classics from Brazil, Spanish

London-based Joanne Rozario (saxophone) joins Christopher Duigan in the
gala dinner concert at Café Bon-Bon at La Petite Dauphine. Playing
selections from their recent CD ‘Close Your Eyes and Listen’, the
programme of modern and traditional classics, crossover improvisations
and up-beat ‘world music’-inspired music blend in this sumptuous
historic venue with a four-course dinner. Included is the World
Premiere of the 'Six Drinking Songs' by Richard Guinness including the
'Bar-Stool Tango' as heard on Fine Music Radio, Cape Town.

Music for a Sunday Morning:
Shepherd on the Rock - Lente Louw (soprano)
The sublime combination of music for soprano, clarinet and piano
provides a rare treat on a Sunday morning. In the spacious acoustic
of the NG Church - Franschhoek, Lente Louw (soprano), Joanne Rozario
(clarinet) and Christopher Duigan (piano) collaborate in a much
anticipated performance of Schubert’s ‘Shepherd on the Rock’. In
addition this concert features the music of Robert Schumann who is
celebrated throughout the world in 2010 on the 200th anniversary of his
birth. The exciting young Cape Town soprano Lente Louw selects her
favourite Schumann songs including ‘Frauenliebe und –leben' while
Rozario plays selection of Schumann’s Romances and Duigan plays the

Café Europa: Stanislav Angelov and Christopher Duigan
With both instruments – piano and accordion- achieving a familiar
presence in popular cultures around the world, the original
combination of the two is one that reveals an uncanny range of
possibility. Bulgarian born Stanislav Angelov, now based in Cape Town
and leader of the famed Cape Town Tango Ensemble, joins forces with
pianist Christopher Duigan. In a combination of easy going café solos
from France and Italy, jazz improvisations and tango rhythms, they
explore many popular styles together with music from tango halls of
Argentina, French sidewalks and Italians cafes; music that exudes
appeal, charm and great passion. Enjoy a relaxed lunch time café

Festival Finale with Federico Freschi (baritone)
Everybody’s favourite baritone, Federico Freschi, performs in
the Festival Finale. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy a musical
performance after lunch, under the oak trees (weather permitting) or in
the 200 year old barn with backdrop of Franschhoek valley mountains, a
selection of the valley’s best wines and Café Bon-Bon’s celebrated
menu. This concert, featuring a number of festival musicians including
Joanne Rozario (saxophone), Stanislav Angelov (accordion) and
Christopher Duigan (piano) ends the festival on a ‘high note’ in an
informal and free-wheeling get together. Book a table for lunch from 12
