This is the annual treat that acoustic music lovers look forward to : The White Mountain Festival over the Heritage Day long weekend.
Once again, there's an incredible line-up with a wide range of genres to cater for a diverse range of music tastes - from acoustic rock to blues, folk, world music, bluegrass and maskandi.
Included on the bill for this four-day festival held at White Mountain Lodge near Giant’s Castle are Just Jinjer’s Ard Matthews, the legendary Vusi Mahlasela, acoustic guitar maestro Nibs van der Spuy, as well as former Tree 63 frontman, John Ellis, who recently embarked on his much-anticipated solo career.
Other must-see acts are Cape Town’s Jack Mantis Band, the king of Zulu traditional music or maskandi, Phuzekhemisi, plus Shannon Hope, Margaret’s Daughter, Barry Thomson, Machineri, Meri Kenaz, Joshua Grierson, Shomon, Jaspar Lepak, Shannon Kenny & Alan Judd, Redhand Blues Band, The Kickstands and Tresor, and more.
Coinciding with the start of the school holidays, the festival known for its relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere and idyllic setting in the foothills of the Giant's Castle Nature Reserve. It's easy to get to – just 34km from Estcourt on tarred roads and 200km from Durban.
Aside from the music, other attractions range from abseiling, paintball and helicopter flips to fishing, boating, hiking and a zip line across a nearby 100m-wide gorge. There’s also a variety of food stalls, colourful arts and crafts and a beer market featuring several local breweries. In addition, festival-goers can look forward to home-cooked meals in the lodge’s restaurant and late nights in the rustic 150-year-old pub.
It's a weekend packed with fun, music and entertainment for the whole family, in one of the most scenic spots in the central Drakensberg.
Tickets cost R450 at Computicket or R550 at the gate. Children under 12 pay R100. The price includes camping in the festival campsite overlooking the dam. Day tripper tickets are also available at the gate, which opens at 8am on Thursday, September 23.
