It's the time of the year when traffic in parts of Johannesburg comes to a standstill. Because the streets are taken over by those crazy cyclists - for fun, for fitness and for pure adrenalin-pumped competition.
2010 is the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge's 14th anniversary and it's become one of South Africa's largest sporing events.
It's got broad appeal. Besides the elite bicycle race, there are other events that are fun for the whole family - like the MTB Challenge, the Children's Cycle Challenge and the Cycle Challenge Expo - where you'll find out everything you've ever wanted to know about bikes, equipment and training.
Last year, more than 25 000 cyclists entered the race. The field for 2010 is expected to be even bigger.
This year's route highlights some of the regenerated areas of Joburg CBD. It's geared to be a challenging ride for serious cyclists and a safe and scenic route for all the riders. Taking over the landmark Nelson Mandela Bridge and the city’s highways with only pedal power will be a buzz for the cyclists.
The City of Jo'burg has already shown the world it's great hosting capabilities with the highly successful recent Soccer World Cup.
Dana Cooper, Momentum Group Brand Executive said: “We are hugely proud to be able to bring an event to life that energises and showcases the best of the City of Jo’burg and its people. It’s a great way to connect the people of Jo’burg, not just the cyclists, but the people who line the streets.”
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and the Gauteng Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works have again pulled together to ensure that safety is placed first during the race.
The Momentum 94.7 Mountain Bike Challenge takes place on Saturday 20 November 2010 and the Momentum 94.7 Children’s Cycle Challenge is on Saturday 13 November 2010.
‘Every possible effort has been put into making the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge everyone’s race - from ensuring the safety and enjoyment of those on the road to the participation of all supporters and the hundreds of thousands of people lining the route,’ said 94.7 Highveld Stereo Station Manager, Ravi Naidoo.
