A POET'S LOVE: SCHUMANN
Federico Freschi, well know for his performances of popular song and musicals, turns his hand to one of Schumann's outstanding compositions for voice - his song cycle Dichterliebe. A collection of short songs, or art songs, around a common theme, the song, or German lied, is one of the most unique and idiomatic art forms of 19th century music.
Christopher Duigan and Federico perform this masterpiece along with a selection of Schumann’s other celebrated songs. Joining them on stage is young Durban-based musician Magrit Deppe (oboe). Magrit plays music by Schumann; the Adagio and Allegro, his Romances for oboe and piano and well as music by Clara Wieck, the inspiration for much of Schumann's early music, and later his wife. Robert Schumann is also celebrated this year in the 200th anniversary of his birth. Schumann's music, personal and Romantic, holds great rewards for those who are prepared to succumb to its intensity.
