What started as a humble race to pay tribute to South African soldiers who lost their lives during World War 1, is now one of the world's greatest ultra-marathons - and 2010 will be the Comrade Marathon's 85th birthday.
What makes this race special - more than its grueling uphills, downhills, twists and turns - is the incredible spirit in which the race is run.

Sure, there are those competing for the glory of gold. But there are many, many more who help, carry, support, limp, stumble and even crawl over the finish line before the final cut-off whistle blows.
It's the stuff legends are made of. To date, the record holder is Bruce Fordyce, a proud South African, who won the race 9 times.
This year, it's a 'downhill' run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban. Every alternative year, the race will be run on the 'uphill' - from Durban to Pietermaritzburg eg 2009 and again in 2011.
