| The Absa KKNK (Klein Karoo National Arts Festival) is probably the biggest national Afrikaans art & culture festival you'll see in
South Africa. And in 2010, the KKNK celebrates its 16th year! So what's it all about? It's when the whole town of Oudtshoorn comes alive with all things artistic to celebrate the Afrikaner culture (although you won't feel out-of-place if you're English-speaking!). There's art, sculpture, painting, dance, drama, music, theatre, poetry. A huge 'mini-city' of large marquees is where you'll find a range of high-quality fashion,
home and decor products on sale from all corners of the country. There's an extensive festival programme - centred on music and
theatre and visual arts, with a strong outdoor character. You can't walk past a tea-garden or
coffee-shop or restaurant without hearing the strains of a haunting
ballad, or a country hit, or a rock band. Every little nook &
cranny & alley way is stuffed to the gills with art & sculpture -
some of which is definitely amateurish, while others are refreshingly
innnovative and strikingly original - with price tags in upper 7 digits! The festival programmes is jam-packed with 1st class theatre productions and music.
There's something for all tastes: from classical to some of the
best-known contemporary music on offer - Amanda
Strydom (her 16th KKNK), Chris Chameleon, Nataniël and Steve Hofmeyr, as well as a host of local heros. Karen Zoid (pictured left) will also be performing this year.
Then, of course, there's the Huisgenoot Musiekplaas
that offers a daytime and evening programme, the Burger
Tongelos tent, the SAB Hap ‘n Tap Feeskasteel, the Klip-innie-Bos, RSG
and a range of other outdoor stages at the festival. It's a place to see and be seen. It's huge ... and it's a
'hellova jol'! More
