One of the major cycling events on the South African calendar is the Cape Argus - which attracts about 35 000 cyclists from all over the world. It's also the world's largest individually-timed cycling event and covers around 109 km.
This year's race starts from the Civic Centre, the route then follows the M3 to Lakeside then Boyes Drive, rejoins the main road from Kalk Bay to Simon’s Town, on up to Ocean View and Chapman’s Peak and finishes at Green Point.
The fastest time recorded for the Cape Argus was 2:27:30 by Robbie Hunter in 2008 – after he'd become the first South African to win a stage of the prestigious Tour de France in 2007.
The oldest person to complete the race was Japie Malan (87) in 2007.
