The Cape Epic is an annual 8-day event. It takes aspiring amateur and pro MTB cyclists from all around the world over some 800 km of beautiful countryside and over some of the most scenic mountainous passes South Africa has to offer (about 16 000m of climbing!).
Each year, the route is different. Riders go in teams of two (only 600 teams accepted for each race), so there are 1200 riders in all. There are 4 categories that riders can enter for: men, ladies, mixed and masters (both riders must be over 40). To enter, riders must be at least 18.
The race is done in stages with prizes for the daily winning team. The emphasis of the race is happy riders and an unforgettable African experience - and everything is organised with this in mind: awesome scenery, 24-hour full service facilities, carbo-loading breakfasts and dinners, nutrition, bike servicing, masseurs, evening entertainment, pre-erected, tented accommodation (or the option of upgrading to mobile home packages or premium packages with hotel/guest house accommodation and dedicated masseur and host.
In fact, it's the largest full-service mountain bike stage race in the world. It's gruelling and super-challenging. It's certainly NOT for woosies.
There are also companion and volunteer programmes for those who'd like to share the experience without having to do the entire race.
