Johannesburg: Diwali Festival of Lights
Saturday, 03 October 2009 Hits : 147
Once again, the Diwali Festival returns to Newtown's cultural precinct ... to celebrate the triumph of good over evil.

Diwali Festival marks the Hindu new year and it is also known as the festival of lights.

Diwali Festival

The first Diwali Festival took place in Newtown in 2005 and every year since - except 2008 due to a financial crisis.  Fortunately, First National Bank has kindly offered sponsorship and this year, the streets of Newtown will once again light up to the sounds, sights and festivities of Diwali - with music, dance, food and fireworks.

2009 promises to be a spectacular event

Festivities start at 11am and a fabulous fireworks display will light up the skies at around 8.30pm. This will be followed by a spectacular bhangra party hosted by popular radio personalities.

Artists from India will perform alongside South African artists. Dance will range from vibrant Bollywood dance competitions to stylish classical Bharata Natyam dance.

Children welcome

Children can look forward to excellent entertainment - like jugglers and puppet shows.  There's also a programme to promote the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ through dance and music. Plus drumming and various competitions and giveaways.

Open to all

The focus would not just be on Hindu people - but it provides a window to Indian culture for all the different communities in Johannesburg and Gauteng to enjoy and experience.

Entrance to the FNB Gauteng Diwali Festival is free and people from all cultural backgrounds are encouraged to head to Newtown for an exceptional Indian cultural experience.
