The Open is part of the Surfing South Africa Pro Surf Tour and offers R30,000 in prize money across the men, women and pro junior divisions. 

Reigning champion Greg Emslie (East London) who will not be defending his SA Open crown this year emphasised just how tough the event it is and how his win last year helped him qualify for the 2009 ASP Dream Tour. "Winning the event last year was no easy task,” said Emslie who resumes his ASP Dream Tour campaign at the Hurley Pro in California at the weekend.

“I hope the contest is greeted with clean 6-8 foot surf this year so the surfers can really battle it out!" 

Top surfers include 2009 SA champion Gavin Roberts (Scottburgh), Matthew Kruger (Durban), former two-time SA champion Wayne Monk (East London), Stanley Badger (Cape St Francis) and Dale Staples (Cape St Francis). 

In the women’s division surfers include: current SA women’s champion Heather Clark (Port Shepstone), U20 SA champion Tarryn Chudleigh (Cape Town), 2008 SA U20 champion Chantelle Rautenbach (Cape Town) and 2007 champion Tammy Lee-Smith (Ballito).
