Durban: Grand Musical Soiree
Friday, 11 September 2009, 19:30 - 21:00 Hits : 127
Local concertgoers are in for a treat with this Grand Musical Soiree at Howard College Theatre on the UKZN (University of KwaZulu-Natal) campus.

Joanne RozarioPresented in aid of the Rotary Club of Westville this entertaining performance features pianist Christopher Duigan and visiting London-based musician Joanne Rozario, playing clarinet and also saxophone.

The programme that is devised to live up to the grand presentation includes many celebrated classical and popular compositions.  Duigan plays Beethoven's Sonata op 57 'Appassionata', Liszt's dazzling Mephisto Waltz No 1 and a selection of Preludes by Rachmaninoff.  Joanne Rozario, who frequently visits South Africa, plays a selection on clarinet including the Adagio from Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, and music for alto saxophone by South American 'nuevo tango' composer Astor Piazzolla, standards by Duke Ellington and the celebrated Pink Panther theme.  The alto saxophone is not often heard in classical performance and this offers a highly original and entertaining introduction to the instrument. Duigan currently maintains an enviable performing schedule on South Africa’s premier concert stages.  He was recently named a South African piano icon and ‘a national musical treasure’  (Classic Feel June 2009).

Proceeds from this concert go to local Rotary charities.  With a similar event in February seeing a sold out hall, those wishing to attend are urged to book as soon as possible.
