One of South Africa's quaint & quirky artists haven is Darling (home to our famous Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout aka Pieter-Dirk Uys).
This fest is one of the most unique cultural affairs around - with a host of excellent talent - like the saxophonist Dan
Shout with The Onion Project and Tyrone Apollis’ Geroeste Music. The
iconic Amanda Strydom will present an Afrikaans cabaret and those who
enjoy comedy theatre will not be disappointed by Rafiek Mammon and Gary
Naidoo’s Let’s Mix It 2.8GLX and The Fiekie and Willie Show, starring
Riana Alfreds and Charles Tertiens.
The
way it works is that visitors buy a ticket for one of seven routes and
get transported by local minibus taxi to three different homes in
Darling where three varied performances are presented. The element of
surprise is that the audiences never know who they will see performing
until they arrive at each voorkamer.
The houses range from small
township abodes to some of Darling’s grand Cape Dutch homes, and the
owners play host to each audience and introduce the performers. It is a
truly South African cultural experience that offers an exciting mix of
theatre genres to suit all tastes. This year, several visual artists in
Darling will open their studios for visitors to meet them and view
their art work. The Darling Studio Exhibition map will also be
available as usual at the Voorkamerfest.
Situated
55 minutes north of Cape Town, Darling is known for its vibrant
community, gorgeous spring spectacle of wild flowers, superior wine
estates, and of course the legendary Evita se Perron that forms the hub
of the fest and is traditionally abuzz with craft, food and wine stalls
in the Piazza dolcEvita.
The 6th annual
Voorkamerfest takes place on Friday 4th September at 5pm, Saturday 5th
September at 12pm and 5pm and Sunday 6th September at 12pm. Tickets
cost R99 per route with R1 from every ticket sold being donated to the
Darling Trust.
