Franschhoek, W Cape: Playing the Game Concert
Tuesday, 04 August 2009, 19:00 - 21:30 Hits : 131
Playing the Game : 'The Key to Immortality' is a free piano concert, featuring Christopher Duigan, well-known South African virtuouso.

Christopher DuiganWith the current efforts by the local community to secure the piano housed in the local NG church well underway, pianist Christopher Duigan visits Franshhoek in early August to encourage and advise those interested in supporting the acquisition of this piano permanently. With the piano now a central focus of the concerts and music festivals that have become a fixture in the village calendar, an ingenuous scheme has been created offering locals an opportunity to 'own ' any one or more of the keys on the keyboard in an effort to raise the R150 000 required the secure this instrument permanently. The sale of the standard 88 keys of the piano keyboard at R1750 each will accrue the required funds including the insurance of this valuable asset.

Individuals, families, wine estates, restaurants, boutique hotels and businesses are invited to claim a key to which their name will be linked on a commemorative plaque to be permanently displayed next to the piano, hence the Key to Immortality. The piano will be owned and administered by the NGK community for use in concerts, festivals and other cultural events that are presented there regularly. In the light that the church is one of major tourist attractions in the village, visited by thousands every year, this offers tantalizing visibility while supporting the long life of the broader cultural life in the village. The piano has attracted much interest from those admiring the spacious architecture and tranquillity of this cultural icon.

Christopher Duigan, who has performed regularly in the church and who directs the annual Music Festival including the much anticipated Franschhoek La Motte Classical Music Festival set for Oct 30 to 1 Nov 2009, secured a loan some years back to retain the piano for use in his other concerts. This time, he will be make a enlightening presentation detailing aspects of the piano in performance and what makes it so worthwhile. He will be offering informed possibilities to those in the audience by linking certain of the keys to particular pieces of music by virtue of their prominent use. So if Beethoven's Emperor Concerto is your thing you will want the low E-flat. If Mozart's Rondo all Turca to tickles you pink too will choose an A and if Take Five is your groove then you will resonate to an E -flat. If its Scott Joplin's The Entertainer that lifts your day you may want to take a whole octave!

Duigan will be on hand to discuss and assist those interested in choosing their own ' ivory' to tickle and naming their key.
