This Thursday evening, the Pietermaritzburg City Hall will resonate with the sounds of some of the greatest classical music ever written. The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra performs with a host of top South African artists in a programme featuring highlights from some of the best-loved and most well known classical works.
Taking centre stage with the orchestra are violin prodigy Jacqui Wedderburn-Maxwell (16) in her final performance before she leaves to pursue her career overseas, Pietermariztburg-born organ maestro Christopher Cockburn and young and talented PMB-based pianist Lloyd Blackbeard. Accomplished local concert pianist Christopher Duigan will also be making a special guest appearance at the concert. Duigan was recently named 'a national musical treasure' - Classic Feel - June 2009.
The concert also features the KZN Miniature Cannon Society who will bring a unique authenticity to Tchaikovsky’s brilliant 1812 Overture. Highlights of the programme include Bach's Toccata and Fugue (organ solo), Mozart's Symphony No. 40 (1st mvt), Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 (1st mvt), Dvorák's New World Symphony (1st mvt), Brahms's Hungarian Dance No. 5 and Bizet's Carmen: Habanera and Les Toreadors. As Pietermaritzburg’s premier symphonic event, this concert promises an evening of sublime listening pleasure for all lovers of magnificent music!
There is safe parking with security patrols around the City Hall and also at there is parking available at the Tatham Art Gallery. Refreshments will be on sale.
