This is definitely one of Africa's top sporting events - where there's high stakes prize money (R3 million) AND high stakes fashion and fun.
 It's traditionally the main annual race where just about every office, union, association and family take a 'flutter on the fillies', and betting pots and sweepstakes abound. It's also one of the fashion highlights on South Africa's social calendar, with the who's who of racing, fashion and trendy society expected to turn out in their droves.
And as they have for over 100 years, the best of the continent’s thoroughbreds
will come together, some for the first time, and compete in the 2 200m battle from which
only one will emerge victorious, and join an illustrious band of previous winners and all the prestige that goes with it.
It's estimated that a massive nationwide betting spree of over R190-million will happen on the day
with R36-million splurged on the outcome of the main race alone. Millions of spectators around the
country will tune in by radio, television or even telephone to follow the
fortunes of their fancies ...
The day kicks off with all the fashionistas parading their stuff before the competition judges at around 09h30, the main race is fun at 16h30 and the massive afterparty - hosted by 5fm and Vodacom starts at 22h00 and ends in the wee hours.
This year's theme is "The Games People Play" and aptly sums up the fun & playful, daring mood you're be sure to find here on the day!
