SAPPI SUNDAY PICNIC CONCERTS – 2009

What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon with good friends and family ... than in the Botanical Gardens at Roodepoort, enjoying a range  of light classical and jazz concerts ...


Concerts are held every 2nd Sunday from now through to the end of September - come early, come to enjoy!  First come, first served.


Bring along your picnic basket, blankets and chairs and a sun umbrella.

This season's line-up:

7 June : CLASSICAL ENCOUNTERS
The classical sounds of violin, cello and piano lead by Deirdre Larkin, plus a special guest appearance by the Austrian soprano Christa Lagler, to entertain you with a variety of smooth classics and familiar songs.

21 June : SWING TIME
Enjoy an afternoon of swinging jazz from a bygone era with Johannesburg’s splendid jazz ensemble ‘Retro-Swing’ featuring singer Andrew Massey and special guests.


5 July : GREAT VOICES
South Africa’s outstanding vocal group ‘The Black Tie Ensemble’ performing hits from the world of Opera and Broadway in a very special concert not to be missed.


19 July : EASY LISTENING
Sophisticated sounds from South African singer Helenne Ulster with the Denzil Weale Trio in a programme filled with great jazz standards for easy listening.


2 August : LATIN FIRE
Chase away the winter blues with the brilliant flamenco guitar of CH2 and their Spanish dancers. This ‘World Music’ concert is guaranteed to spice up your Sunday picnic with great excitement.


16 August : SOWETO STRING QUARTET
The award winning and famous Soweto String Quartet playing their greatest hits, plus a special guest appearance by the highly acclaimed and vibrant Ekurhuleni Youth Choir


30 August : ARRIVAL OF SPRING
To herald the arrival of Spring we are proud to present the magnificent big band of ‘The South African National Ceremonial Guard’ directed by Major Andrew Strugnell in an afternoon of great music from around the world.


13 September : PETER SARSTEDT & FRIENDS
The renowned international singer and composer Peter Sarstedt will be making a special appearance at the Sappi Sunday Picnic Concert to entertain you with his unique brand of pop and folk music.


27 September : TOP OF THE POPS
Bringing the 2009 concert season to a close we’ve invited the sensational pop idol Veronique Lalouette and her band to brighten up your day with lots of memorable and popular hits.
