Comrades Marathon

Also known as the "Ultimate Human Race", Comrades is arguably the greatest ultra marathon in the world.  Athletes come from all over the world to pit their training, endurance and mental strength in an attempt to conquer the distance of almost 90 kilometres.  This year's race is the 'downhill' ie starting in Pietermaritzburg and ending in Durban.

The race was first run in 1921, when a far-sighted Vic Clapham sought to pay tribute to the comrades of World War I who endured awful pain & hardships, and felt that those who'd fallen should be remembered in a unique way - where individual frailties could be put to the test and overcome.

Since then, the race has been run every year - except during the years of the Second World War: 1941-1945, with the direction alternating each year between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, the so called up & down runs.

The Comrades Marathon has become a cherished national treasure and attracts thousands of runners, spectators and television viewers every year.
