Stonehenge, Northern Cape: Afrika Burns Festival
From Wednesday, 09 September 2009
To Sunday, 13 September 2009
Every day
Hits : 83
Right off, the Burning Man festival is not just an Ama-Zing hectic sex, drugs & rock 'n roll music weekend.  It's way deeper ... and more meaningful.

It was born out of a coming together of like-minded individuals and organisations who are questioning the consumer-driven, commercialised society and what effects it's having on the individuals living within it.

Burning Man’s mission statement states:

Our intention is to generate society that connects each individual to his or her creative powers, to participation in community, to the larger realm of civic life, and to the even greater world of nature that exists beyond society”.

Afrika Burns

Afrika Burns is an official offspring of the original Burning Man and it embraces and follows in the spirit and principles and ethos that has developed out of it:

It's a communal effort which tries to promote, protect and produce social networks, public spaces and works of art in a mutually-respectful and sympathetic environment.

It's a participation event where everyone is invited to play ... and be the change they want to see.

It's got a whole lot of civic responsibility - and value for our fellow humans and their well-being.

It's a sense of immediacy - the here and now that connects to the real things that matter in life

It's bucking against consumerism.    And everything commercial.   There's no sponsorship, transactions or advertising.  There's no exploitation

It's got a lot to do with giving.  Without asking anything in return.

It's respecting the environment.  Treading softly upon the earth.  And leaving it in a better way than it was before ...

It's open to all.  Unconditionally.  With open and pure hearts.

According to Afrika Burn's website - "Just like Burning Man, Afrika Burns aims to be radically inclusive, we hope that its meaning is potentially accessible to anyone. The touchstone of value in our culture will always be immediacy: experience before theory, moral relationships before politics, survival before services, roles before jobs, embodied ritual before symbolism, work before vested interest, participant support before sponsorship.  We hope that the ideas in the principles will become a way of life for those who have experienced them spawning independence, initiative, creative expression."

You're also requested to please bring everything that you will need to survive, shelter, food and water and a free spirit.

Got the karma?  Then check out Afrika Burns for directions & more info ...
