Internationally acclaimed South African opera, Princess Magogo, finally returns to our stages.
The opera is based on the life of Princess Constance Magogo kaDinuzulu (1900 – 1984) who, to this day remains a Royal legend – widely recognized as a singer, composer, musician, teacher, and political activist. According to the opera’s librettist, Themba Msimang “she was a custodian of the people’s culture and born at a crucial time in Zulu history. At the time the British were trying to squash the Zulu monarchy. They were amazed to discover how intense and how intricate the Zulu royal system was of which she was a direct descendent”. Princess Magogo has it all: stunning design, exhilarating dancing, wonderful singing and lavish costumes. “Princess Magogo…a bold, breakthrough opera never before seen in this country.…..the Ravinia Festival audiences more accustomed to Mozart, was dazzled.” WALL STREET JOURNAL, JUNE 2004. Director Themi Venturas teams up with acclaimed artist Andrew Verster as set and costume designer, and Declan Randall as lighting designer. Dutch star conductor Vincent de Kort returns to lead the production with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra in the pit.
Featuring the finest young South African operatic talent Princess Magogo is sure to be one of the most exciting and innovative musical events this season! Bookings at Computicket |
