| Discover the orchestra, and learn about the instruments played, at a special concert by the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra and some of its partners. YOUNG, up-and-coming disadvantaged musicians will show off their musical prowess when the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company presents an afternoon of entertaining orchestra music at the Linder. The Wozani Discover the Orchestra concert, on 25 May, is being held in conjunction with the Refugee Ministries Centre. As part of its efforts to develop a love of instrumental music in the public, the orchestra and the centre have put together an exciting programme. It includes popular tunes like Moonlighting by John Furman and Lion King, as well as classics like Beethoven's Finale. The Johannesburg Beginner Wind, Beginner String and Foundation group will begin the show by introducing the orchestra instruments to the audience. This will be followed by a formal performance in the Linder Auditorium, with the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra, Symphonic Wind Band, Jazz Band and Chamber Strings. "The purpose of this exciting concert is not only for the love and appreciation of music, the company would also like to raise funds for those who are less privileged," says Nomalungelo Twala, the company's spokesperson. Formed in 1998, the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company has provided individual and group musical training to youngsters from around the city. Tickets for the Wozani Discover the Orchestra concert are available from the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company at W40 Williams Block, University of the Witwatersrand's education campus, 27 St Andrews Road, Parktown. Prices range from R30 to R50. For further details, contact the orchestra company's offices on 011 484 1257 or email orchadmin@global. |
