Gangs and dignity
Wiser invites you to the launch of Steffen Jensen's new book, Gangs, politics and dignity in Cape Town, on Tuesday, 22 July at 5pm. After the fall of apartheid, the idea of a new dawn spread through SA society. But this sense of optimism was soon beset by an overarching fear of crime and criminal gangs emanating from townships. These townships may have been previously regarded as problematic, but they were also one of the loci from which it was hoped this new dawn would emerge. Speakers at the launch include Achille Mbembe, Adéle Kirsten, Thaddeus Metz and Kelly Gillespie. It takes place in the Wiser Seminar Room, 6th Floor Richard Ward Building, East Campus.

In a feat of film preservation that would be the first of its kind, Scorcese intends to preserve this unmade film, by making it himself. The Birds by Alfred Hitchcock, the apocalyptic story of a northern California coastal town filled with an onslaught of seemingly unexplained, arbitrary and chaotic attacks of ordinary birds will also be screened. This happens on Monday, 21 July at 4pm at Studio 2, Wits School of the Arts Film and Television School. For more information go to www.digitalarts.wits.ac.za or www.redteamgo.co.za.
