Don't miss "Cecil Skotnes: a private view", which moves beyond the public face of Skotnes, offering a more private view, opening at the Standard Bank Gallery on Thursday, 31 July.
It focuses on his more intimate work – drawings, cartoons, prints and paintings on paper, some dating back to the late 1950s. The exhibition also includes letters and documents collected over five decades by the artist's wife, Thelma, photographs by Paul Weinberg, personal memorabilia, and items from Skotnes' studio.
Also opening at the Standard Bank Gallery in the downstairs space this week is Toys For Africa – an exhibition of handmade African toys presented by The African Toyshop, perhaps the first shop of its kind in the world to stock only toys that have been handmade in Africa.
Works by five of The African Toyshop's premier artists will be on show, as well as the best examples of the many other ranges available at the shop.
The gallery is on the corner of Simmonds and Frederick streets, and is open Mondays to Fridays 8am to 4.30pm, and Saturdays 9am to 1pm. Phone 011 631 1899 for more info.
