Every year, thousands of local residents and visitors alike gather at Nelson Mandela Bay to witness one of the most adrenaline-pumping events. The Ironman competition - definitely not for faint-hearted - sees hundreds of competitors put through their paces in grueling events to win the Ironman title.

For those not wishing to compete, it's still a great day out, full of exciting events and other competitions where numerous goodies are up for grabs.

The 2008 Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa Triathlon comprises:

3.8km Swim across the bay
180km Cycle
42.2km Run (Full Marathon)
