About
Gondwana Game Reserve lies about 30 km to the north-west of Mossel Bay on South Africa's famed Garden Route
In the Western Cape, it's one of the first, and ony authentic Big Five private game reserves, due to its size. It's spread over 10 000-hectares with a variety of open grasslands, indigenous fynbos and valleys. It's overlooked by the towering Swartberg mountains to the north, and the majestic Outeniquas to the south. In a class of its own, Gondwana is within easy reach of all the beautiful beaches, world-class golf courses and breath-taking scenery of the Garden Route, yet is just a 4 hours drive from Cape Town ... or a 45 min drive from George airport.
Another two serious plusses for Gondwana are a) it's mild and near-perfect weather all year long and b) there's no malaria in the area!
Their dedicated team of conservationalists and rangers (led by Mark Rutherfoord) have done an excellent job of re-introducing many species that have not been seen in these areas for aeons: like the Big 5 (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant). The reserve has growing numbers of grey rhebok, kudu, red hartebeest, springbok, elend and the endangered Cape mountain zebra. It's also a bird-watcher's paradise with over 300 species of birds identified, many of
which are endemic such as
the Cape Sugarbird and the Orange Breasted Sunbird. Safaris are conducted in open game-viewing vehicles. Popular horse-back safaris are also offered in a fenced-off area of the reserve.
Fynbos Camp was the first lodge to open and the new Royal Kraal complex with it's unique Khoi-San-inspired design provides
guests with a 360° view of the surroundings as well as star-gazing through
the glass ceiling from bed at night.
