About

De Kothuize (Cot houses) are a collection of 3 lovingly-restored Cape Karoo houses (four- and five-star) in this historic village.  Each of the houses is a national monument.  Each has been thoughtfully furnished in true historical character.  And the result is quite magical.

The two 4-star properties are in Parsonage Street (Graaff-Reinet’s most historic street, stretching from Reinet House at one end to the Drostdy Hotel at the other). The 5-star house is situated in Cradock Street which is often described as “a mile of history” - and that's not hard to see why.

166 Cradock Street

This large and luxuriously-appointed, classic Karoo house offers two bedrooms, two bathrooms (one with shower; one with bath en-suite), separate sitting room and large dining room.  There is a lovely large walled garden with a vine-covered patio where you can sit and enjoy views of the surrounding mountains.

16 Parsonage Street

This Karoo cottage offers two bedrooms (one with an extra-length, king-size double bed; one with two single beds, all four-posters), one bathroom (with shower and bath), a fully-equipped kitchen and a combined sitting room/dining room.  A paved garden patio with table and chairs is a lovely place to sit and relax and enjoy the clean Karoo air.

This cottage has some magnificent antique features: yellow wood floors, beam and planked ceilings.  A stay here will give you a taste of a glorious by-gone era.

18 Parsonage Street

Adjoining No. 16, this cottage also has two bedrooms (one with an extra-length, king-size double bed; one with two single bunk beds), one bathroom (with shower and bath), a fully-equipped kitchen and a large sitting room and a separate dining area.  There is a cosy paved garden area to sit i and enjoy.

This character-laden cottage is furnished with several antique items, including sets of antique prints.

The Kothuize are centrally located and within easy walking distance of the town's extensive museums and several very good restaurants.

Why visit De Kothuize
Best Features: Spotlessly clean and comfortable with a sense of the historic. Nice space to unwind.
Bear In Mind: Each cottage is totally independent and not part of a bigger lodge. There is no pool.

Things to Do and See
Tug your boots on, pack a picnic basket and get up to the view points above town. You can drive through the nature reserve and spot game on the way up to the Valley of Desolation and town view sites.  Leave enough time before sundown (2hrs) to give yourself the chance to do justice to both views.  Sundown is already too late to see the light play on the pillars of rock. There is a short hiking trail to the various view points overlooking the Valley.  Again, leave yourself enough time to get back to the bottom gate before it closes. Times vary for winter and summer so please ask when you go in.

For the history buffs there is ample to do and see in the town.  Many of the original buildings have been restored and are historical monuments.
There are also some very interesting art galleries including the Pierneef Museum.
