Perhaps called these "Black Lands" by Jan van Riebeeck in reference to the darkness of the indigenous Renosterbos vegetation in Summer, the Swartland is affectionately known as the 'bread basket' of South Africa - with a history of over 200 years of grain farming.  Today, there's bustling businesses and industry, with a growing reputation for excellent wines and olives.
