Kalahari

Sweltering sun.  Ancient landscapes.  Russet-coloured dunes.  Endless horizons.  There is something old and timeless about the Kalahari with its wealth of wild life and minerals.

It's home to 40 raptor and vulture species (out of a total of 67 species found in southern Africa), seven owl species (of 12 found nationally).   There are numerous game farms in the area with unusual, rugged plants and plentiful wildlife - the most famous of which are the black-maned Kalahari lion, prolific springbok (South Africa's national animal), cheetah and majestic gemsbok (oryx) with their Japanese brush-stroke markings and scimitar horns.

And then there's the life-blood of this arid, desert region - the beautiful and mysterious Eye of Kuruman - a natural spring that yields 20 - 30 million litres of crystal-clear water daily ...
