Western BattlefieldsIncl. Van Reenen, Ladysmith, Spioenkop, Colenzo, Weenen, Bergville, Winterton, Estcourt, Mooi River, Greytown, Kranskop Ladysmith is the commercial hub of this region. It became famous during the Anglo-Boer War for the "Siege of Ladysmith", when it was held ransom by enemy forces for six long months (late 1899 - early 1900).Every April the Ladysmith Swartkop Challege takes place. Teams compete to pull ancient guns (cannons) each weighing over a tonne up hills and over a gruelling course - an extreme way to pay tribute to and remember bygone heroes!Now it's peaceful town with a rich heritage. Ladysmith offers access to and great views of the Drakensberg. Its altitude & closeness to the 'Berg means it often gets light snowfalls in winter.
