This area is characterised by rolling hills and open grasslands.  Newcastle is the biggest town in northern KZN with a rich history and it's home to several battle sites, such as Laing's Nek, Majuba, Fort Amiel and Schuinshoogte.

Historical Lutheran Church at Luneburg
Paulpietersburg to the north is a quaint town at the foothills of the flat-topped Dumbe mountain - a popular paragliding & hiking site. Nearby Lüneburg, settled by the German Lutheran Missionaries in 1854, has the oldest German school in KZN

The alternative "Rainbow Route" linking Mpumalanga with the coast, also passes through this region.
