Deep South & Ennerdale regionAffectionately known as the "Deep South", this area was initially founded as Lenasia, an Indian dormitory settlement (under the previous Apartheid regime) and has since mushroomed with the influx of rural dwellers and foreigners flocking in to seek work in the "City of Gold". Probably the most 'distant' of Joburg's areas, it's largely a 'dormitory' area and has very little in the way of industy, commerce and business in its own right. Many of its residents also work as far afield as the industrial areas of Vereeniging and Vanderbijl Park in southern Gauteng. The City of Johannesburg has plans to develop this area more in line with its other regions so that it becomes more economically empowered and independent, and turn it into "an integral part of Greater Johannesburg, a viable and sustainable environment".
