Sandton & North Eastern Suburbs

This area of Johannesburg is home to many of the older, established suburbs like Yeoville, Orange Grove, Highlands North and Kew - that lie along Louis Botha Avenue, the old main road between Johannesburg and Pretoria. It also includes many of the newer and more affluent suburbs like Sunninghill, Sandhurst, Benmore and Parkview.

And it's also home to Alexandra, an old township with a significant place in South Africa's history. It was proclaimed as a native township in 1912 and was one of the few places where Blacks could own property.  In 1958, under the Nationalist Government, the land was expropriated and freehold property owners were reduced to paying tenants.  25 years later, these properties were sold back to the residents. The Alexandra Renewal Project is designed to uplift the area and redress the previous injustices.

This region also encompasses some of the older, historical suburbs of Houghton Estate (where Madiba currently lives), Saxonwold and Parkwood, where you'll often find impressive old mansions from by-gone days, built by those who made their fortunes in the gold rush days, but wanted a more 'suburban' lifestyle.  

On its north-east border, around the N3 Eastern Bypass, are the suburbs of Modderfontein, Linboro Park and Lombardy East.
