This is the South Western region of the Free State, it's dry and dusty - and shares many of the Karoo's characteristics. 

Gariep Dam at sunsetIt's major drawcard is Gariep Dam, the largest freshwater lake in South Africa.  Situated on the Orange River, it has a shoreline of 435 km and a surface area of 360 km.  Most of the area's activities and development is focussed here.  It's a sprawling area of resorts, camping, adventure activites and outdoor experiences.
