Greater Port Elizabeth Region The friendly city of Port Elizabeth is situated on South Africa's "Sunshine Coast" of the Eastern Cape province. It's the fifth largest city in South Africa and it's the official gateway to the province as well as its economic capital. It has a rich history: 'discovered' by Portuguese explorer, Vasco da Gama, landing site of the 1820 British Settlers, home to the KhoiSan people, tribal home of the Xhosa nation. It's the official gateway to South Africa's 'Garden Route' (which stretches eastwards until Mossel Bay) and has a great, temperate climate: summers are warm and moderate with an average temperature of 18 - 20 deg C in summer, and 8 - 20 deg C in winter. It also has a warm ocean with average temperatures of 21 deg. C in summer and 14 deg. C in winter. Port Elizabeth's bustling airport is the easiest entry point, but its also easily reached by road via the N2 (east and west), and the N9 and N10 highways. A popular holiday destination for both locals and foreign tourists, Port Elizabeth is good to visit all through the year.
