Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans RegionAn area that's a photographer's dream - with fascinating landscapes and beautiful sunsets. Many of the pans are reachable only by 4x4. The western shore of Ntwetwe Pan is probably the most interesting in the Makgadikgadi area, with landscapes of rocky outcrops, dunes, islets, channels and spits. Sowa Pan has a unique beauty and is the largest, natural salt pan in the world. In the dry season, these pans are an endless, shimmering white vista that has an 'other worldliess' to it - yet with the rains, it bursts into life as a carnival of waterbirds flock to their shores: flamingos, pelicans, ducks and teals. Grazing herds of buck, zebra and wildebeest also congregate at the start of the rainy season (around September). The heavy rains, come December, fall like sheets of water falling from the skies, and can rapidly flood the plains. Within the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, there are only campsites (no lodges) - with very little in the way of ablution facilities, so take your spades and a good 20l of water with you.
