Farewell to Rockey’s of Fourways International Lodge & Backpackers
The sad end to an era … after 13 years, Rockey’s has closed its doors … and we’ve all moved on.
But we’d like to salute the many who over the years arrived as strangers … and left as friends. Rockey’s was an institution – a crossroads – in the lives of kindred souls. A place where friendships were made, partnerships forged, and oops – even marriages happened.
In these pages, we are publishing some of the pics that tell some of the story … please take a look and if you werethere, (or if you have some of your own pics to publish & share), please add the names, dates, background and stories surrounding them. Perhaps there are some amazing people you met here, who you’ve lost touch with – perhaps you can reconnect … find out where they went to, what they’ve got up to …
So many times, we witnessed the beginnings or middle of an excellent story in the making … but never got to read thefinal chapters. C’mon, spill it.
It’s SO much better than closing your eyes & putting the dart down somewhere on the open page in front of you!
One of the biggest downers in our years of running Rockey's lodge was that often all lodges – the good, the bad AND the ugly – are lumped together in directories & web listings. We were constantly amazed (as are other good lodge owners throughout the country) at how many guests entering Rockey's for the first time were almost overwhelmed to find such a welcome change from what they'd been subjected to previously. One bad stay leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Two of them just shouldn't be allowed to happen.
With your constant input & feedback , you – and like-minded travellers - will be able to discover … and share … those “WOW” moments that make traveling the most priceless degree from the University of Life.
Beyond money, beyond time (those two infamous bandits of good travelling) . here you can find - and add!! - your own personal favourites: that tour of a life time! ... the special hideaway for two in the mountains . one hectic time at that lodge on the Wild Coast . your extraordinary experience in the Malutis .
But beware! This site is not for tourists! It's dedicated to independent travellers from all walks of life, ages, creeds & cultures. For those who know that there’s so much more magic to see, feel, hear and experience on the ground – that’s never even hinted at through the rose-tinted windows of a luxury coach.
