Introducing a fresh look at tourism websites ….
Back In Africa.com The more we’ve looked at internet-based travel sites – especially in southern Africa – the more we’re convinced that there’s a definite shortfall in the industry. There’s an incredible quantity of information – and not nearly enough quality information that’s easy-to-use, reliable and helpful.
Who's behind Back In Africa.com?
Evan & Alison Wilson head up the team. We’ve both travelled abroad and within southern Africa extensively and are passionate about our country. We have been lodge owners (for 13 years), so fully understand that side of the coin – dealing with advertisers and being lumped together on sites and in directories with others whom you know are providing a second-rate, unethical or even dishonest service.
And of course, we’ve been guests – wading for hours through directories and websites looking for somewhere to stay; somewhere that’s really unique and refreshingly good – and not finding it often enough. So that’s our quest: to find those rare gems – unique and inspiring places that have that something special – be it in its surroundings, its unusual construction, its welcoming hosts or the interesting activities on offer.
And no matter how much we travel, or where in the world we go ... there's nowhere we'd rather be than... back in Africa!
What is Back In Africa.com?
The website address has been around since 2002 – first used by our lodge – Rockey’s of Fourways in Johannesburg and later as a travel portal & forum.
For over 18 months we have been building this new site – learning about the ins & outs of the new web 2.0 technology– the social networking aspects, blogging, forums, trends and so on – speaking to our current advertisers, researching the market and doing our homework. Already the site has a good page ranking and is getting a respectable amount of hits. Top nationalities visiting the site on average in order: USA, Germany, RSA, Europe, Australia, China, Netherlands, Sweden, UK.
And now we’re ready to take it to the next level … so we’ve redesigned, restructured and relaunched the site. But it's one of those site's destined to be a 'work in progress' - always tweaking, always improving, constantly updating and looking for fresh news, ideas and really special lodges, tours, events and things to do.
What is the new Back In Africa.com all about?
It’s proudly South African. (Where else in the world would you see the rugby team hoisting their country’s president on its shoulders when they’ve won the World Cup!!)
It’s dedicated to helping discerning, independent travellers discover inspiring and unusual lodgings throughout southern Africa. From beach cottages to boutique hotels and big city apartments to guesthouses, eco-lodges, traditional home-stays and holiday rentals – each carefully selected, thoroughly researched and honestly reviewed.
It’s NOT a directory. Every place is chosen because it is exciting and special in some way. How many stars it’s been graded is not a criteria. Because there are some things you just can’t grade –the intangible qualities that make a memorable travel experience: atmosphere & ambience, receptiveness of your hosts, sensitivity to the environment. Nor is price a main consideration. Some of the humblest places offer the most rewarding and enriching experiences.
There is no commission. No booking fee. Guests can contact lodges, tour operators and other suppliers directly – and enjoy any special offers and better rates.
The advanced search facility helps to match the right guests for the right place
With the specially-developed search function, you will be able to search for accommodation by destinations, interests, settings and personal preferences. That’s how the right people end up at the right places. Which makes for really happy guests. And really happy lodge owners. And the start of good, lasting relationships ...
And isn’t that what true hospitality’s all about?
