Collection junkies now have another precious coin to add to their stash - a pure gold quarter ounce commemorating the 2010 FIFA (Tm) World Cup which takes place in South Africa.
The first coin was minted at Soccer City in Soweto on Monday on an antique press.
These form part of a launch set for the World Cup coin series which will feature the official South African FIFA logo, with elements of the South African and German coat-of-arms symbolising the handover the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
The minting of these 2010 South African World Cup commemorative coins began in 2006 with a gold quarter ounce coin and a R2 silver crown.
In 2007, the South African Mint added another 1/10th ounce coin to the series.
The 2008 coin series featured these 3 coins and in 2009, the World Cup mascot Zakumi features on the series.
A 1-ounce gold coin will be added to the 2010 coin series as well as a series of pure silver medallions.
The coins struck on Monday can be bought at the Mint's coin world shop in Midrand,
http://www.samint.co.za/ at around R4,500 each.
