South Africa's media darling and Academy award-winning actress, Charlize Theron has got together with the Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) Chelsea to bring soccer opportunities to underprivileged children in South Africa.
The three year commitment between Theron’s
Africa Outreach Project and LAFC Chelsea will see the development of a community-wide soccer programme for schools in the uMkhanyakude District of KwaZulu Natal.
The programme will include uniforms, cleats, balls and equipment, along with professional training for local coaches, referees and administrators. The soccer league training will also include life-saving health education administered through a mobile health programme, funded by her project: Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP).
Theron, a UN Messenger for Peace, hopes that ultimately her Project will create safer, healthier lives for impoverished children and their families in South Africa, especially those suffering from HIV/AIDS.
"Our goal is to help truly create a safer, healthier and better life for the young people in South Africa, especially those living in remote areas, and to ensure that the resources we bring are self sustaining. The three year commitment is so incredible and key to being sure that the program will be around for many years to come," Theron said in a statement.
With the FIFIA World Cup 2010 on African soil for the very first time, CTAOP hopes to put the spotlight on the urgent need to provide sustainable health, education and recreational resources to remote areas where HIV/AIDS rates are unacceptably high.
